Ponta Delgada ,  July 15, 2015

Regional Government invests 3.8 million Euros in the construction of new Temporary Shelter Centre on S. Miguel

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stated today in Ponta Delgada that the new Temporary Shelter Centre, a space that will be shared by Caritas of São Miguel and the Novo Dia Association, is "the greatest work in the area of Social Solidarity by the end the current legislative period."

Andreia Cardoso spoke at the presentation ceremony of the project concerning the future temporary shelter centre for homeless people, which involves an investment of governmental investment of around EUR 3.8 million Euros.

The Regional Secretary praised the work developed in partnership by the two institutions involved that has led to the sharing of this space, adding that the tender for the contract work will be launched in August.

"Our priority is to ensure that these users may benefit from a solution towards the acquisition of permanent housing as soon as possible and within coordinated approach that is tailored to their individual needs," said Andreia Cardoso. The government official pointed out that this initiative aims to "ensure the preservation of their dignity and their return to normality so that they may take an active role in defining their personal paths and promoting their full integration in the community.

The Temporary Shelter Centre will have capacity for 90 users: 60 users in situations of emergency or temporary shelter and 30 users for training activities.

"Over the past decade, we have learned a lot," the Regional Secretary said, adding that "the combination of permanent shelter with well-organised set of support services is the best form to support these citizens in improving their living conditions and to prevent these situations in the future."
