Regional Government fulfils commitment to support housing autonomy of families, says Piedade Lalanda

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity said today in Terra Chã, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, that the Government of the Azores is "fulfilling the commitment" to continue supporting the housing autonomy of families, either through the re-housing programme or the "Families with Future" programme; these measures currently support over a thousand households.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the name plates in two new streets in that village, Piedade Lalanda stressed that "a new phase will begin for the families who will live in the 47 recently built houses," which represents the "beginning of this renewed change in the urban development of Terra Chã."

The Regional Secretary emphasised that this investment over 3.2 million Euros was intended to expand the urban area of this neighbourhood, through an "urban renewal project that will definitely remove families from houses with poor living conditions."

"With this initiative, the Regional Government aims to renew this neighbourhood by taking into consideration the respect for local identity and re-housing families in their area of origin," stressed the government official.

"The awarding of 47 houses is the fulfilment of an aspiration that now becomes reality for the families who will have their new homes in the first phase of the neighbourhood renewal programme," said Piedade Lalanda.
The new renewal phase will cover more than 52 families and is intended to reduce energy costs for families with the installation of solar panels and double glazed windows."

Piedade Lalanda also mentioned the effort to hold families responsible for their new homes, stating that one cannot improve the quality of life of Azorean citizens if the Government is the only one trying to solve the problems of families.

In this context, the government official considered "essential that those who will benefit from this investment may be jointly responsible for the maintenance of their new houses."

"A total of 3.7 million Euros have been allocated under the urban renewal programme since the beginning of the year, which also corresponds to a direct investment in the regional economy as the implementation of these measures has involved several construction companies," said Piedade Lalanda.

For the Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity, it is also "the Region's responsibility to stimulate and support regional companies as well as to maintain families in their areas of residence."
