Regional Government calls for civic participation of young people in the construction of collective future

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity called for the involvement of children and young people from Faial Island with their communities, reminding that civic participation is an "extremely important" exercise for the collective future.

Andreia Cardoso spoke at a special plenary session organised by the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth under the 8th Rights Week. According to her, civil participation "is the same as saying that we are informed and committed to our community, and that our actions are constructive."

The Regional Secretary asked young people to assess their level of involvement in public life, stressing the importance of ensuring that this participation "benefits all people."

"This may sound like a silly exercise, but the truth is that thinking about these things is extremely important for your future," noted Andreia Cardoso. In this regard, she demonstrated that youth civic participation "promotes school success," improves resilience, "promotes the respect for difference," and develops communication and leadership skills.

Either through volunteering, voting or the practice of law, the Secretary for Social Solidarity added that "all these things are very important if you wish, for example, to become members of the Parliament and, as it is done here at the Assembly, devote your time to ensure that your government does the best for your community and for all citizens."
