Ponta Delgada ,  June 22, 2018

Parental Education programmes in the Azores already covered about 2,500 participants

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity revealed in Ponta Delgada that the Parental Education programmes promoted by the Azorean Government have already covered 2,500 participants since their implementation.

At the opening of the Second Forum on Parental Education, promoted by the Institute for Social Security of the Azores, Andreia Cardoso stated that "there is no doubt that the Region has made a considerable progress in terms of Parental Education."

"In addition to the diversification of programmes, which have covered different age groups, those applied in the Azores have also grown to encompass parental figures other than parents. Given their success, they have motivated the training of an increasing number of technicians in the different social responses provided in the area of Childhood and Youth," said the government official.

In the Region, family intervention in parental education began in 2011 with a pilot project developed on the island of São Miguel. Meanwhile, it has extended to the islands of Terceira and Fail in 2013 and to Pico in 2016.

According to the Regional Secretary, the various programmes have encompassed almost 2,500 participants since their implementation, including parents and other parental figures, children and young people, kindergarten teachers and professionals working in Residential Homes throughout the Region.

Nevertheless, Andreia Cardoso points out that "results are not measured by figures alone," as it is already possible to observe and quantify changes in the attitudes of parental as well of children and young people. In fact, they have abandoned negative or coercive practices and, consequently, behavioural problems, replacing them with positive practices not only in family context, but also in school context.

"As a result of the greater involvement of parents in their children's schooling, the impact of these programmes on the promotion of school success is also observable," said the government official. According to her, "there has been a very significant increase in demand from parents themselves and other parental figures who have participated voluntarily in various programmes."

The results achieved have motivated the inclusion of Parental Education into the Regional Strategy to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion for 2018-2028, says Andreia Cardoso. There are plans to reinforce this initiative by providing training to technicians and by increasing the number of activities promoted among families.
