Parental Education is priority investment of the Regional Government, says Andreia Cardoso

The Regional Secretary for Social Solidarity stated in Praia da Vitória that the Regional Government is committed, through the Parental Education programme, to ensure that parents and caregivers have all the resources to build a healthy relationship with their children.

"This Parental Education project is an initiative in which the Government has strongly invested throughout the Region," Andreia Cardoso stressed, recalling the recent meeting that was attended by two hundred families integrated into training groups. According to her, it proved that "there is no stigma in Parental Education as we may all need support regardless of our circumstances."

Andreia Cardoso spoke Wednesday at the closing of another series of training sessions held under the "More Family, More Youth" programme, which took place in the first half of 2017. During these sessions, 10 diplomas were delivered to the parents and children who successfully completed the sessions under the intervention axis directed to school context at Tomás de Borba Basic Education and Secondary School and Vitorino Nemésio Secondary School.

The Secretary for Social Solidarity praised participating schools for their involvement and for having embraced this project, highlighting its importance to the educational success of children.

Regarding the various measures taken by the Regional Government to support children and families, through the promotion of positive parenting, the Parental Education programmes have been reinforced since their implementation in 2011, covering caregivers and parental figures on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico.

The first edition of "More Family, More Youth" programme, directed to children/young people aged between 9 and 18, took place on July 2016. It involved the participation of 63 professionals and was organised in partnership with Nossa Senhora de Oliveira Social and Parish Centre, through a protocol with NORMA-AÇORES and the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra.

New editions of this training programme are planned for the second half of this year and are expected to cover school and residential contexts as well as families identified by the competent entities or who wish to participate on their own initiative.
