Government of the Azores marks anniversary of Convention on the Rights of the Child

The Regional Secretariat for Social Solidarity marks today the 29th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child with a seminar on the "Promotion of Rights in the Digital World" taking place in Praia da Vitória.

This initiative is promoted by the Azores Commissioner's Office for Childhood, involving the participation of about 300 young people and representatives of institutions in the area of Childhood and Youth. The seminar was also attended by entities such as the National Directorate of the Public Security Police (PSP), the PSP Lisbon Metropolitan Command, the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO), and local institutions such as Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade Secondary School, "casas do povo" (community centres) and youth associations. Throughout the day, participants will discuss the dangers associated with new information and communication technologies.

Andreia Cardoso, who chaired the opening session, reiterated the Regional Government's commitment to promote environments that foster the full development of children and young people in the Region. On the occasion, she recalled the need to adapt protection mechanisms for children and young people to the reality of the new digital world.

"You are our first priority, precisely because we believe that the future will be with you and the better prepared you are, the better the future of our Region, the country and the world will be," said the Regional Secretary.

The Secretary for Social Solidarity also stressed that "it is fundamental that we be attentive to this new world that opens to our children and our young people every day, namely to what it represents."
