The regional secretary for Social Affairs enhanced on Monday night in São Sebastião, in Terceira Island, the essential role that the Casas do Povo fulfil on behalf of the communities in which they are inserted.
In the solemn commemorative session of the 36th anniversary of the Casas do Povo of that town, the governor remembered that, after a phase in which these institutions had a teaching role of a model of society and in a way of foresight and assistance, today they are “authentic Community centres, promoting several activities of socio-cultural animation, with aim at the promotion of the Community in which they are inserted and to its dinamization in an comprising way”.
With this new vision in which “the central objective” is the well-being and the improvement of the conditions of life of the citizens and families, through the creation of social answers intended and adapted to the needs of their Community, “the Casas do Povo assume a determinative role for the affected Community and for the local development, creating measures of integration and fight to the social exclusion”, it underlined Domingos Cunha.
The secretary for Social Affairs pointed out, on the other side, “the interest and the dedication” of the directions of the Casas do Povo that, in a voluntary and committed way “maintain the dynamic” of this kind of institution, “the practice of socio-cultural activities, the frequency and use of their equipments and buildings and the innovation in their acting and continuity”.
He even exemplified with the case of the birthday institution, referring the energy of its Directorate and the adhesion of its associates to the activities that are provided.
In the Region there are 113 affectionate equipments to 110 Casas do Povo, with capacity for 4.790 users, being the equipments, especially, free times ateliers and conviviality centres for the elderly.
As high moment of the commemorations of this 36th anniversary of the Casa do Povo of São Sebastião, there was inaugurated a library, which books were offered by the children of a couple of already deceased teachers (Luís Manuel da Silva Oliveira and Maria Virgínia da Silveira Baptista Soares, who lived in the parish), fact that Domingos Cunha considered of huge cultural relevance for the community.
In the commemorative ceremony trophies were also delivered to the athletes of the year of the masculine and feminine teams and of the futsal schools, of that Casa do Povo.
