Ponta Delgada ,  June 16, 2017

Rui Luís proposes decentralised training plan for health professionals in the Region

The Regional Secretary for Health proposed the establishment of a training plan starting in 2018, providing a decentralised and accessible offer to all the islands, which is duly coordinated with all public and private entities with powers in this area.

"I will propose that the issue of training be one of the agenda items of the next meeting of the Regional Health Council so that we may jointly consider the type of training we can offer health professionals in coming years," said the government official.

Rui Luís challenges this advisory body composed of 23 councillors, which meets twice a year, to issue an opinion on this matter as the next meeting will take place already in September.

The Regional Secretary, who was speaking at the Seminar "Management and Administration in Health: what future?", Held in Ponta Delgada, made it clear that the topic of training also concerns the tutelage, similar to professional orders and trade unions.

This seminar took place in Ponta Delgada and was organised under a Master in Health Management and Administration, conducted by the Higher Education Cooperative of Porto. During the event, it was announced the extension of this training initiative to Horta.

In his speech, the Secretary for Health pointed out the need to fight against waste and, hence, it is important that all health professionals should have some notions about management and administration.

"It is fundamental to start thinking about management by goals and results, so that we can evaluate what we can do on a daily basis," said the government official.

The Regional Secretary also highlighted the introduction of biosimilar medicine as an example of savings.

"Biosimilars have the same therapeutic function, with lower costs. The openness of healthcare professionals to its introduction, would lead the industry to lower the price of drugs," said the government official.

On the other hand, Rui Luís stressed that the evaluation of "health costs" should not be carried out in a "blindly" and, in this context, recalled the importance of cost/effectiveness.
