Regional Government prepares strategy to implement new European Data Protection Regulation

The Regional Secretary for Health revealed today in Angra do Heroísmo that the Azorean Government is preparing a global strategy for the implementation of the new European regulation on protection of personal data.

"At this moment, we are carrying out an inventory of everything that exists in terms of software and infrastructures in order to understand what we have and where we can store this information from all Public Administration sectors," said Rui Luís.

The Secretary for Health, who was speaking at the conclusion of a workshop on Data Protection promoted by Saudaçor, added that, after this survey, the second step includes the creation of "a manual of procedures."

"It is intended that we all work in the same way," Rui Luís said, noting that "it is not because there is such a regulation that we must now work on the protection and confidentiality of health data."

The Regional Secretary stressed that a significant number of Community rules are already being implemented in the area of health, adding that, by May 2018, public authorities and companies will have to adapt themselves to the new legislation.

The General Regulation on the Personal Data Protection stipulates that the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data by introducing new rules and substantial fines in case of non-compliance.

Saudaçor promoted this meeting, attended by specialists, with the aim of making these changes known to managers and health professionals as well as to the public in general; a second clarification session took place Wednesday at Angra do Heroísmo Cultural and Congress Centre.
