Regional Government extends secondary education to the island of Corvo

The Government of the Azores approved on Friday a decree amending the teaching level of Mouzinho da Silveira Basic Education School, which will now become Mouzinho da Silveira Basic Education and Secondary School.

The decision was announced by the Secretary of the Presidency at the end of the statutory visit undertaken by the Regional Government to the smallest Azorean island on Thursday and Friday.
According to André Bradford, the decision to extend secondary education to Corvo island is justified by the forthcoming expansion of compulsory schooling to 18 years as well as by the need to ensure that youngsters from Corvo may attend school without leaving their island.

At the same meeting, the Government also decided to sign a protocol with Corvo Town Hall for accessing and processing the Albert I of Monaco photography collection, recently acquired by the town hall. Similarly to other existing photography collections in the archipelago, the Government intends to enhance it by defining its display form and allow the permanent access to this heritage on Corvo island.

The Government also authorised the procedures for the contract works for the surfacing of a road section - "Estrada Leste" - between Lomba do Rodio and Caminho do Pico Jão de Moura in the context of the ongoing renewal works of the regional road. Moreover, an estimated sum of 25,000 Euros was awarded to support the organisation of Moinhos Festival, an event promoted by Corvo Youth Association.

Following the procedures started in January, the Government also decided to launch the public call for tenders for the transport of goods between Flores and Corvo. The Regional Government of the Presidency assured the new public service obligations will enable the reduction of fares.

Furthermore, the Government has also announced the signing of an ARAAL contract was signed with the purpose of maintaining support to the installation of solar panels in houses, building a landfill facility for construction and demolition waste in collaboration with the local town hall and allocating financial support to Corvo agricultural and fishing associations.
