The Government of the Azores awarded 40,845 Euros on Tuesday to support three cultural initiatives that aim to enhance the knowledge on Europe among the Azorean population.
Granted by orders of the Regional Secretary of the Presidency, published in the Official Journal on Tuesday, these funds are also intended to support artistic and cultural manifestations that may contribute to the creation of new audiences and raise their level of enjoyment.
The Azores were distinguished with the “European Region of the Year 2010” award. Through this initiative, the Government intends to “fill gaps in the cultural, sports and scientific offer of the Region and raise awareness for other cultures, with special emphasis to the European, Atlantic and outermost regions.”
The Government has allocated 13,000 Euros to the Azores Film Commission, a non-profit association based in Angra Heroism, to support the implementation of a European cinema cycle to start in the city of Horta on June 5.
Some films by the most iconic film directors in Europe in the post-1957, the year when the European Economic Community was created, will be exhibited during the cinema cycle.
In turn, the Government awarded 14,650 Euros to the Vox Cordis Musical Association in order to support the organisation of the concerts “Sharing the Music,” “Musicais em Concerto” and “Em nós...o Fado.”
Moreover, the amount of 13,195 Euros was allocated to the Azores Institute of Culture for the publication of the book “A Europa no pensamento dos açorianos ao longo da História” (Europe in the thought of Azoreans throughout History) by Professor Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida. This work reviews the thesis and thoughts of some of the greatest figures of Azorean culture on the Europe of their time.
