Government approves project for the construction and operation of Radiotherapy Centre on São Miguel

The Government of the Azores announced today the approval of the project for the construction and operation of a Radiotherapy Centre on the island of São Miguel as a Project of Regional Interest (PIR).

Promoted by the Quadrantes company - Clínica Médica e Diagnóstico, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda., this represents an investment of around 6 million Euros, revealed the Regional Secretary of the Presidency during the presentation of the press release of the last meeting of the Council of the Government.

According to André Bradford, the project, supported by the Government, will provide the Region with a new health care unit with specialised services in a medical field of considerable importance "with a maximum treatment capacity for approximately 500 patients per year."

The government official also stressed that this investment, "with a considerable social relevance for cancer patients and their families," will prevent the travel of cancer patients to Mainland Portugal. Patients will be benefit from a closer contact with their families and the support of regional social support institutions.

The Council of the Government also decided to classify the project presented by FTM company - Fábrica de Tabaco Micaelense, SA. as PIR project. The company intends to relocate the plant to the Azores Park area in the Municipality of Ponta Delgada.

According to André Bradford, this project represents an investment of about 8.5 million Euros.

The Council of the Government also classified the project for the creation of a Wind Farm on Terceira by the CAEN company - Companhia Açoriana de Energias Renováveis, Lda. as PIR project.

With an estimated total budget of 5.6 million Euros, the project to be implemented in Cume Mountain Range in Praia da Vitória will contribute to the diversification and consolidation of the energy supply from renewable sources.

As the Regional Secretary of the Presidency stressed at the occasion, the Regional Energy Plan estimates that by 2018, 40% of primary energy and 75% of power generated in the Azores will be from renewable sources.
