Celebrations of “Azores: European Region of 2010” with over thirty events in the last quarter of 2010

Under the distinction “Azores: European Region of the Year 2010,” the celebration programme will continue to promote European cultural diversity in the Azores.
The celebration of the Azores as European Region of the Year 2010 will continue in the archipelago with a variety of events to celebrate the European cultural, political and social diversity among the Azorean people.
The programme for the remaining months includes the exhibition of European films under the Cinema Cycle “The Image of Europe,” promoted in a partnership with the Azores Film Commission, as well as gastronomy events photography exhibitions, concerts and debates on European themes with relevance for the Azores.
Furthermore, the celebration programme for the last quarter of 2010 has scheduled over three dozens of events taking place on the nine Azorean islands and in Brussels. These events were organised with the purpose of bringing to the Azores the European cultural diversity and experiences without forgetting the promotion of the Region abroad.
The Polish and Danish Week takes place in Angra do Heroísmo in September, an event organised in a partnership with CulturAngra which includes piano recitals, gastronomic fairs, photography exhibitions and the exhibition of films from both countries.
The celebration programme also includes various initiatives organised in the area of science and debates,  such as the “2010 Researchers’ Night,” an event promoted by the European Commission to take place in Lagoa, the Seminar “Community Financial Tools for the Research and Innovation in the Outermost Regions” and the celebration of the European Day of Languages to be held on São Miguel where one of the most valuable European treasures will be celebrated:  23 official languages and over 60 regional or minority languages.
In October, the Azores will participate in the 8th European Week of Cities and Regions – OPEN DAYS to take place between October 4 and 7 in Brussels where the Region will present the project on the “Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre” considered as one of the 150 best projects co-financed by the European Union.
The presentation of the book by Professor Onésimo Teotónio de Almeida, which consists of a review on the theories and thoughts of some of the greatest figures of Azorean culture on Europe, will also be held in October.
In the area of music, the European Region of the Year has established partnerships with the International Jazz Festivals taking place on Terceira, São Miguel, Santa Maria and Faial.
The celebration programme will also include several debates on the role of the Azores in European and transatlantic relations and the cultural exchange between the Azorean society and the German community, which are scheduled for the end of the year, as well as the event “Do you know what Social Europe can do for you?,” an initiative promoted by the European Commission to raise the citizens’ awareness for the actions carried out by the European Union in the context of employment and social policies as well as of equality of opportunities.
