Regional Government to move forward with work for stabilisation of cliff in Baixa da Areia, São Miguel Island
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated that the procedure for the stabilisation work of the cliff contiguous to Baixa da Areia in Caloura, São Miguel Island, was launched today with the sending of invitations to three construction companies. The works contract has a base price of 147,500 Euros.
According to Gui Menezes, the need to carry out this work arises from recent phenomena of instability that have occurred on the surface of the cliff, which may put the safety of users of the bathing area at risk.
"The main purpose is to guarantee safety conditions to the users of the Baixa da Areia bathing area," said the government official.
The Regional Secretary spoke during a visit to the site, revealing that the work is expected to begin in October.
This work corresponds to an overall investment of more than 180 thousand Euros, including the project, which was developed in collaboration with Lagoa City Council.
Gui Menezes mentioned that a geotechnical study was carried out, which preceded the project, due to the need to study the cliff, so as to find the best technical solutions for the protection of the cliff.
The Regional Secretary also highlighted the Regional Government's "commitment in guaranteeing the conditions for the safe use of the coastal areas on our islands, either through the direct management of these areas or the collaboration with regional municipalities."
The works contract includes the stabilisation of the cliff, through the installation of a mesh nailed to the soil and the application of shotcrete reinforced with metallic fibres.
