Regional Government invests 106 thousand Euros in coastal and port consolidation in São Lourenço, Santa Maria Island

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology said the coastal consolidation work of São Lourenço port on Santa Maria Island "has been concluded, except for the reinforcement of the extrados surface that will be completed as soon as there the appropriate stone becomes available.

Fausto Brito e Abreu spoke during a visit to the site. He stressed that this contract work, an investment of 106 thousand Euros, will "improve the operating and safety conditions" for port users. This port had "some weaknesses resulting from bad weather conditions over the years, namely in the beaching ramp, access stairs and protection walls."

Brito e Abreu was satisfied with the execution of the work, which covered an approximate area of 450 m2. It included the reinforcement of the existing protection area as well as the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the area surrounding the port. The government official added that this intervention "completes the major work carried out by the Azorean Government in order to protect all coastline of São Lourenço."

Moreover, the work involved the demolition of the initial section of the old protection wall, which was torn by the force of the sea, and the construction of a new wall surrounding the entire protection area in the limit of the platform.

It also included "the placement of basalt stone blocks up to the level of the protection level, which will ensure a more effective protection of the port platform and minimise the risk of overwashing," said the Regional Secretary.

Brito e Abreu also announced that the Government of the Azores will proceed with the recovery of São Lourenço swimming pool, a planned intervention to begin after the summer season. According to him, "this work will involved an investment of thousand Euros and has a completion period of days."

The intervention in São Lourenço Port was a commitment taken by the Government of the Azores.
