Regional Government increases investment for the promotion of Science in 2015

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology visited the Azores Environmental Observatory in Angra do Heroísmo, where he revealed that that the Government will increase public investment in Science by 75%.

"In 2015, the Regional Government will increase public investment in the field of Science by 75%, part of which will be allocated to research while the remaining amount will be directed to scientific dissemination and maintenance of jobs at the Azores Science Centres," specified Fausto Brito e Abreu.

The government official acknowledged the importance of the Environmental Observatory for "the dissemination of Science, through recreational and educational activities addressed at people of all ages, especially at a school-aged public," adding that "Science is accessible in this space to everyone in a fun way."

Opened in 2008, the Azores Environmental Observatory consists of an interactive exhibition area, a media room for the organisation of courses, workshops and exhibition of documentaries, a documentation centre and a free internet access space for computer courses and demonstrations.

The Science Centre has conducted several laboratory experiments and activities, focusing mainly on experimental and interactive learning. Currently, the "Volta à Física em 60 Segundos" (A Journey to Physics in 60 Seconds) exhibition is open to the public at the premises of this centre.

Under the "Science Night" initiative, taking place at the Azores Science Centres, the Environmental Observatory hosts today an event intended to show the science behind the music, starting at 8 PM.
