Regional Government establishes fishing restricted area in Quatro Ribeiras marine area on Terceira Island

The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Sea, Science and Technology, has decided to regulate fishing activities in the marine area of Quatro Ribeiras on the island of Terceira. The decision was taken after hearing the associations representing the sector, the Village Council of Quatro Ribeiras and the City Council of Praia da Vitória.

The ordinance, published today in the Official Journal, prohibits the practice of commercial and recreational fishing in the marine area of Quatro Ribeiras, except the practice of recreational fishing from shore and recreational catches between tides without the aid of vessels.

This measure follows the creation of a working group that involved the Regional Government, the Terceira Shipowners' Associations, the Village Council of Quatro Ribeiras and the City Council of Praia da Vitória. It concluded about the need to impose restrictions on fishing activity in the marine area of Quatro Ribeiras.

This new fishing restricted area contributes to the conservation of marine biological resources as well as to the sustainable management of fisheries in the Region.

The ordinance published today enters into force Tuesday, August 7.
