São Roque do Pico ,  July 10, 2019

Regional Government already invested half a million Euros in safety and operational conditions of fishing on Pico Island, says Gui Menezes

The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology highlighted in São Roque do Pico the "partnership work" between the Regional Government and regional fishers in the sustainable management of fish resources, thus offering them "a word of recognition for their awareness about" this matter.

Gui Menezes was speaking at the opening ceremony of seven fishing gear houses and the Collection Point of São Roque do Pico Fishing Centre, an investment of about 180 thousand Euros.

Each fishing gear house has a useful floor area over 10 m2 and is adequately ventilated and supplied with electricity and water. In turn, the collection point for the delivery, storage and shipping of fish has an area over 35 m2 and is equipped with an ice machine and the respective storage silo.

According to the Regional Secretary, "in recent years, only in the island of Pico, the Government of the Azores has invested more than half a million euros in interventions related to improving safety and operational conditions of fishing."

In terms of reinforcing and improving infrastructures in the sector, Gui Menezes announced that the Government will move forward this year with the procedures for the repair of the Porto Formoso slipway, 120 thousand-Euro investment, and with the he rehabilitation of the warehouses located in Vila Franca do Campo Fishing Port, an investment over 270 thousand Euros.

The government official also recalled that the new public tender for the construction of Madalena Fishing Centre, a 1.2 million-Euro investment, in under way. It will include the construction of 20-metre graving dock, a secondary berth that will increase the mooring area for local fishing by about 50%, and a 1,200 m2 embankment.

Gui Menezes also mentioned "planned or already ongoing investments on other islands," namely upgrading works of Lajes das Flores and Horta cold storage units, whose tenders were launched last month, an investment of more than five million Euros.

The upgrading and expansion works of Vela Cold Storage Unit on São Jorge Island is also under way, corresponding to an investment of more than one million Euros that should be completed within two months. Additionally, there are planned interventions for Madalena Cold Storage Unit, an investment of more than five million Euros to be carried out between 2020 and 2021.

According to the Regional Secretary, the Government invested about 23 million Euros during this legislative term "in the improvement of conditions for fishers to carry out their activity, including works already completed, ongoing interventions and those to be launched soon."

The investments in fishing ports and in the cold storage network "do not limit the Government's intervention in creating the conditions to ensure the future of this sector" stated Gui Menezes.

In this context, he highlighted "the training of professionals in the sector" as "an area to which the Azorean Government has paid special attention," noting that 10 courses for were held this year for the training of fishers and local fishing vessel skippers as well as for the operation of engine-powered vessels. These initiatives covered more than 150 trainees and representing an investment of more than 380 thousand Euros.

Simultaneously, the Regional Government promoted Basic Skills Acquisition (ABC) Courses for the basic education certification at the 4th, 6th and 9th form level. Aimed at fishers under the "Valorizar" Network, they have managed to certify 155 fishers on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in eight courses.

Also in the scope of training, Gui Menezes stated that a cooperation protocol was signed this year with the Vocational Training Centre for Fisheries and Sea (FOR-MAR) and the Azores Fisheries Federation for the organisation of courses and seminars on environmental management, maritime radio communications and maritime safety.

In regards the Plan for the Promotion of Tuna, there are training sessions under way for shipowners and fishers to adopt new fish conservation techniques that guarantee exports to high-value markets.

In his speech, the Regional Secretary defended that "one of the main challenges concerns the promotion of competitiveness and sustainability in companies operating in the fisheries sector with a focus on not only on innovation and product quality, but also on alternative forms of income."

In this context, he highlighted the three Local Action Groups for Regional Fishing, whose applications have already closed "with a good adherence rate," registering the submission of 45 projects, representing a proposed investment of 1.7 million Euros. They are mainly intended to create local development dynamics led by fishing communities.
