Government of the Azores included in European experimental project on fisheries

The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Fisheries, joins the ORFISH through the exchange of knowledge and technological innovation between the Outermost Regions of the European Union. This project aims to maintain and diversify traditional fishing activities by avoiding pressure on coastal resources.

Coordinated by the delegation of the Government of Guadalupe, the project also includes the Azores, Madeira, Martinique, Canary Islands, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte. It will be in force for one year.

In addition to governmental departments, ORFISH comprises a range of entities, from companies to research institutes, and, in the case of the Azores, these partners are the Azores Fisheries Federation, the University of the Azores and the company Seaexpert.

ORFISH is the result of the strategic decision for sustainability in the new Common Fisheries Policy with regard to fishing activities in Outermost Regions. This project includes the conduction of experiences using FADs (fish aggregating devices) in the Azores and Guiana Sea, the monitoring of night fishing activities in the Caribbean, and the use of handlines and bottom longlines in the Canaries and the Caribbean, among other activities. Moreover, there will be other information sharing activities, such as the creation of an online platform and the reinforcement of cooperation between the entities from different Outermost Regions.
