Fishing activities value the Azores, says Regional Director

The Regional Director for Fisheries stated in Horta that the fishing activities value the Azores, emphasising the importance of vocational training in this sector.

Luís Costa spoke during a visit to FORMAR, the backup vessel for the training of fishers in the Region. The visit was also attended by 4th form students of António José D'Ávila Basic Education School.

During the visit, which marked the World Sea Day on Faial, participants became acquainted with the different equipment and fish gear used in the Azores. The visit also addressed some issues related to safety and survival at sea.

The Regional Director for Fisheries pointed out that "the Azores carries out sustainable fishing activities compared to other world regions," being, therefore, a "source of pride."

During the World Sea Day, the Regional Director also visited a fish marketing company, where the children could see how the whole chain works, from the purchase of fish to the moment it is packed to be transported outside the Region by air.

Luís Costa defended the importance of the quality of stowage and handling of fish on board vessels, which contributes to its enhancement and, consequently, to the improvement of fishers' income; the latter is one of the priorities of the Government for the fisheries sector.

According to the Regional Director, this activity was intended to "raise the awareness of children for the importance of Azorean fresh fish consumption." The visit also included the distribution of materials on the "Promote the Azores Sea" programme.
