The Regional Secretariat for the Sea, Science and Technology, through the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs, has started the procurement procedures concerning the contract work for the reinforcement of the coastal protection and redevelopment of S. Vicente Ferreira Port on São Miguel Island.

Included in the Regional Public Works Charter, the contract works has an estimated budget of 100 thousand Euros. It aims on the one hand, to reinforce coastal protection and, on the other hand, redevelop the area, thus creating better safety conditions for port users and improving the surrounding area.

With a completion period of 90 days, the works will minimise the effects of sea waves on the coastline of the surrounding bay, which cause the removal of sediments at the foot of the existing ramp and may lead to accidents.

In this context, the intervention includes the construction of a 40-metre long rockfill prism at a higher level than the quay wall, and the repair of the beaching ramp. 
 
The chosen direction of the rockfill prism and the removal of the current quay wall took into account the contacts made with the local population. This intervention will allow the expansion of the maritime access canal and the ramp.
