Porto Novo on Corvo Island to be subject to protection and rehabilitation works

The Regional Director for Sea Affairs stressed today the Regional Government's commitment to "protect and enhance historic and natural maritime heritage," namely the relevant assets for cultural tourism and the preservation of collective maritime culture in the Azores.

Filipe Porteiro spoke at the presentation of the intervention project in Porto Novo and the surrounding area, a work that will be carried out in collaboration with the Regional Government and Corvo Town, through an ARAAL contract.

"Porto Novo was the key point of whaling on Corvo Island," the Regional Director said, adding that it is located in a site "of great tourist interest, adjacent to the windmills, which are the island's main symbol."

According to Filipe Porteiro, this intervention is included in a broader work to be carried out where the windmills are located. It aims to "rehabilitate the ramp, namely the old pavement that is partially destroyed, consolidate the wall of the pier, which has been damaged by sea erosion, and recover the access platform to the sea and the pier."

With an investment of around 130 thousand Euros, the contract work is part of the rehabilitation project of the windmills area, where the Boat House is located. These structures are geographically close and share a historical and cultural connection.
