Classes in the next academic year will begin on the 14th of September of 2009 and will end on the 25th of June of 2010 in all pre-school, basic school an secondary school educational establishments, including public, private and co-operative schools. This decision was adopted through a decree of the Regional Government that ended the flexibility previously conferred to educational establishments regarding the scheduling of the scholastic calendar.
The decree of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Vocational Training schedules, also, the dates for the classes of the three scholastic periods, from the 14th of September to 18th of December, from the 4th of January to the 26th of March and from the 12th of April to the 25th of June.
The decree also establishes three periods of school holidays: from the 21st of December to the 3rd of January and from the 15th to the 17th of February and from the 29th of March until the 9th of April.
Regarding the vocational training schools, the decree stipulated that these schools must adopt the same scholastic periods. However, given their idiosyncratic context, these schools are free to schedule the dates for the opening and closure of the academic year.
As she justified the decision to adopt and apply a common scholastic calendar and the consequent revocation of the law of 2002, the Regional Secretary for Education alleged that experience has demonstrated that " the flexible management of educational activities, done in accordance with the specific social and economic contexts of each school, did not contribute in any significant manner to create conditions for improving the quality of education that is offered to students and to the efficacy of the pedagogical work of teachers and non-teachers."
The decree also stipulates rules for the scheduling of exam dates, evaluation meetings and the training of teachers.
