Regional Secretary for Education and Culture defends joint efforts of school community

The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture defended in Angra do Heroísmo the need for a joint effort by the entire school community to benefit the current generation of Azorean young people.

"When we see some light at the end of the tunnel, I urge you all, students, teachers, school leaders, parents, tutors and community leaders, regardless of their differences, to join forces and undertake a final effort towards the promotion of scientific, technical and civic development of this generation of Azorean young people," said Avelino Meneses.

The Secretary for Education spoke Thursday at the delivery session of diplomas of excellence and merit to secondary school students at Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade School. In the occasion, he stressed that ensuring a "better future for our children is worth the sacrifice."

Avelino Meneses pointed out that some "positive" indicators are "evident" in the third year of implementation of ProSucesso - Azores for Education, Integrated Plan for the Promotion of School Success, designed for 10 years, which requires "reinforced surveillance so that this progress does not revert to regression."

In this context, the government official pointed out that the progression rates already "exceed" the goals set for 2020-2021 in both basic and secondary education. They stand at an average between 75%, the highest figure in scientific-humanistic courses in secondary education, and at 90%, the highest figure in elementary education."

At a time when education is increasingly "an investment to promote development, our generation finally" can recover from "the structural backwardness" affecting the country and the Region, stated Avelino Meneses.

According to the Regional Secretary, the delivery of diplomas of merit and excellence to about dozen students at Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade Secondary School demonstrates that success "essentially derives from the commitment" of agents in the education system and that facilities "are not the mainstay of institutions.
