Lina Mendes, Regional Secretary for Education and Training, urged for the pursuit of excellence in education and openness to entrepreneurship by Azorean students in Angra do Heroísmo on Wednesday night.
The Regional Secretary spoke at the prize-delivery ceremony held the Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade School, an initiative promoted by that school with the purpose of distinguishing 9th form students who scored 5 in all subjects and 12th form students with an average equal than 18.
Lina Mendes stressed the importance of students working to get a hard education that will enable them to play a relevant role in the development of society with new ideas and reinforced skills.
The Regional Secretary, who was satisfied with the academic achievement of the distinguished students, also acknowledged the role of parents in helping their children as one of the potential factors of success.
With regard to these factors, Lina Mendes also emphasised the role played by schools and their respective leaderships as well as by teachers, who are the cornerstone of the education system.
This year four 12th form students were distinguished. With regard to 9th form students, no one scored 5 in all subjects, although some have scored 5 in almost every subject except in Physical Education.
The prizes awarded last night were sponsored by the city of Angra do Heroísmo City Hall, the Angra do Heroísmo Chamber of Commerce and by the Rotary Club.
