Quality of education depends more on the teachers’ commitment rather than infrastructures
The Regional Secretariat for Education and Training defended on Terceira on Monday that the quality of education depends more on the commitment of teacher rather than the existing school infrastructures.
“It is essential to invest in education and the Regional Government has developed a project in order to accomplish this goal. The quality of education mainly depends on the quality of teachers, thus physical infrastructures are not everything,” stated Lina Mendes during at the opening if the renewal works of the São Mateus da Calheta Kindergarten and Basic Education School in Angra do Heroísmo.
The Secretary also underlined the importance of knowledge and training for the development of a community and pointed out the importance and the value of school establishments.
“A school marks the development of a village,” stated Lina Mendes before the educational community of São Mateus.
With a 1.2 million Euro budget, the contract work included the renewal of the kindergarten and the cafeteria, the expansion of the multipurpose room and the construction of a passageway between the two buildings.
The São Mateus School, which is attended by nearly 130 students, is located in a fishing area of Terceira Island.
According to the Regional Secretary, the school itself cannot meet all the demands required by modern society; therefore it is necessary that families take responsibility for the education of children.
