Ponta Delgada ,  January 19, 2012

New Água do Pau Basic Education School is infrastructure of excellence

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training visited the construction site of the Água de Pau Basic Education School in the late morning and ensured that this new school will have the necessary conditions to promote "excellence."

Speaking to journalists after visiting the school, Cláudia Cardoso said that "with regard to the infrastructures, we have some of the best schools nationwide and we certainly have a very good infrastructural network of schools as evidence by the one we have visited."

The government official also stressed that this investment "is going very well" as the "the completion period was estimated at 24 months, that is, it would end in September this year, but the school is expected to be completed by the end of July so that we can the start the new school year with another one school in operation.

For Cláudia Cardoso, the Água de Pau Basic Education School, with an estimated budget of 13 million Euros, "is a school with a vast potential, being equipped laboratories and sports areas of excellence," which will not only complete the network of sports infrastructures on São Miguel, but also the educational structure planned for Lagoa under the School Charter."

This school will receive students from preschool to the 9th form, which will allow "them to follow their school path at the same school; this situation brings some obvious advantages, such as the fact that they can stay in a place they know," stated the Regional Secretary.

Cláudia Cardoso recalled that "a student goes to school at the age of 3 or 5 and remains at the same school until the 9th form, thus privileging what has been defended by several international documents: the follow-up of students by the same teacher during the same school level."

With regard to the teaching staff, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training revealed that teachers "from both schools in Lagoa or even from Ponta Delgada schools will have the possibility of becoming attached to the school’s teaching staff and we will also cover possible shortages by hiring teachers."
