Distance learning to start Monday in the Azores

Distance learning starts in the Azores next Monday, April 20, and will be implemented for the remainder of the 3rd term, through a regional strategy that combine the School Management System (SGE) already implemented in all regional school establishments with the “Learning at Home” initiative, which will be broadcast by RTP/Açores for curricular complement.

To ensure that all Azorean students have access to the curricular contents of the 3rd term, the Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, more specifically the Regional Directorate for Education, has conducted a comprehensive survey by household to identify the existing needs regarding access to computers and the Internet.

After identifying needs, school establishments distributed this week nearly 2,000 laptops on loan to the households that did not have them.

With regard to Internet access, the Regional Government, through the Regional Directorate for Public Works and Communications, has extended the contract for mobile communications to students and, subsequently, the necessary equipment will be distributed over the next week to households that do not have Internet access.

Hence, the Regional Government has worked on a strategy to ensure that all Azorean students, from Santa Maria to Corvo, will have access to both laptops and the Internet, which are essential for students and guardians to access the SGE platform.

Several tools and changes were introduced to the SGE platform that will contribute to remote interactivity between teachers and students, namely the “Study at Home” Mural. It allows teachers and students to publish and share documents, images, worksheets, video links and/or presentations, among others, thus creating a communication dynamic that, despite not replacing the "normal" classroom context, brings educational agents closer and blurs barriers between teachers and students

In addition to the institutional management of SGE, which already allowed teachers to register absences, student data, documentation and write summaries, among other things, this systems also offers, besides the mural component, a wide range of contents, namely games, challenges and contests, providing teachers with the possibility of guiding the activities proposed to students and monitor their learning.

“Study at Home” offers a significant number of curricular contents, from preschool to secondary school, and includes the contents of REDA - Open Digital Educational Resources, allowing not only the use of available contents but also the introduction of new contents by teachers to work in their classes.

Additionally, this component also allows the scheduling of classes between teachers and students by video conference, according to the schedules defined by schools for the 3rd term in their Distance Learning Plans, as well as the scheduling of class council or teaching meetings, also by video conference.

The distance Learning Plans were developed by each School Establishment and submitted for validation until April 13. They are based on the guidelines sent by the Regional Directorate for Education, as set out in the document “Guidelines for the Development of Distance Learning (E@ D),” which focuses on the principles of Distance Learning to be observed at this time and the implementation of distance learning, both in terms of management and teaching.

In addition to the online component of the Regional Government's strategy, the Regional Directorate for Education will broadcast on RTP/Açores curricular contents prepared by the Prof DA Mathematics team, covering all elementary education levels, as well as activities aimed at preschool-aged children.

The school programming on the regional public channel to support the activities of preschool and elementary school teachers will be broadcast from Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm.

Hence, the solution implemented by the Regional Government, in partnership with RTP/Açores, aims to complement a digital and online strategy, already put into practice through SGE, with the television broadcast of educational contents for elementary school students and activities for preschool levels.

Accordingly, from preschool to secondary school and from Santa Maria to Corvo, the Regional Government offers a comprehensive solution that leaves no student behind and allows educational agents in the regional educational system to use resources as best as possible to face the constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
