Cláudia Cardoso praises support and promotion of sport in the municipality of Lagoa

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training praised yesterday all the work carried out by the municipality of Lagoa towards the support and promotion of sport in that municipality.

Claudia Cardoso spoke at the opening of the new synthetic grass lawn of the “Mestre José da Costa Leste” Football Camp where she stressed that this work will provide the Santiago Futebol Clube with better conditions, allowing this sports club to further invest in the work that has been developed whether at the level of the sports training of children and youngsters or at the level of competition.

“I am sure that Santiago Futebol Clube will benefit with the renewal works undertaken at the “Mestre José da Costa Leste” football camp. Upon its opening in 2002, it was the first field on the island of São Miguel to be have a synthetic grass lawn,” and now it is a wise decision to invest in the renewal of this sports equipment made available to the Santiago Futebol Clube. This club is almost half a century and has a significant number of athletes involved in sports activities distributed according to various levels.”

Mentioning the promotion of sport in the Region, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training stressed that number of affiliate athletes increased from 11,920 in 1995 to 21,844 at the present moment. At the training levels, the number of young affiliated athletes, aged between 8 and 18, grew from 14,472 in 2003 to 16,173. The government official stressed that “we can be proud that nowadays nearly 9% of the Azorean population are affiliated athletes.”

With regard to the training levels, Cláudia Cardoso recalled that “potential participation rate was of 38.75% in 2010, if we were to determine the number of athletes over the potential population in the Region.” She added that the “Escolinhas do Desporto” (Sports Schools) project has demonstrated an ongoing vitality and growth as evidenced today by the existence of 410 centres in the Azores, tripling the initial 125 centres when this project was implemented in the school year 2001-2002.”

In terms of the sports development indicators in the Azores, the numbers of clubs participating in regular competitions increased from 201 to 250 and the number of affiliated athletes grew from 15,905 to 22,000. In addition, the numbers of clubs participating national competitions rose from 37 to 51 in the present season and the number of female athletes increased by 50%.

The investment in sport has grown steadily and the Government now ensures a support in the amount of 12.5 million Euros to the activities developed by the training levels of sports clubs in addition to investing 2.5 million Euros in the “Escolinhas do Desporto” project and enhancing the quality of sports infrastructures.

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training highlighted the fact the Azorean Government is determined to create the necessary conditions in order to ensure the access of all to sports activities in adequate facilities provided with the essential sports equipments and without megalomanias.

“The works carried out in the Mestre José da Costa Leste Football Camp, which opened today, is a good example of the accomplishment of this goal,” concluded the Regional Secretary for Education and Training.
