The 7th Azorean Physics Olympiads, an activity which is annually organised to stimulate and develop a love for physics among students, will be held on the island of São Miguel between April 15 and 16.
The event is organised by the Arrifes Basic Education School and the Domingos Rebelo Secondary School, in a joint partnership with the Portuguese Physics Society, the Regional Directorate for Education and Training and several sponsoring entities.
During this two-day event, high school and senior high school students will apply their knowledge in the resolution of exercises/problems of everyday life as well as in the adaptation and resolution of new situations.
The Olympics are organised in two levels, one integrates high school students (teams are composed by three students and each school can only be represented by one team) and the other integrates senior high school or vocational training school students, who participate individually (each school may be represented by a maximum of three students).
In both levels students must undergo a theoretical and a practical test (which focus on handling laboratory equipment, assessing cognitive and practical aspects). The overall rating is awarded according to the average of the results obtained in both tests.
The tests, to take place at the Arrifes Basic Education School (Level A) and at the Dmoningos Rebelo Secondary School (Level B), are based on the Physics curriculum for High School and Senior High School levels, respectively.
Taking into account the nature of this event, which intends to acknowledge the commitment, the dedication and the scientific interest of our students, the 3 best teams of both levels will be awarded. In addition to these prizes, the winning team of Level A, and the three best classified teams of Level B will have the opportunity to participate in the national phase of the Physics Olympiads to take place on April 24.
Ina addition to the aforementioned tests, all participants will visit the Expolab – Experimental and Laboratory Science Centre on April 16 in the village of Lagoa, where they may conduct many fun experiments and activities in the area of Physics and Chemistry.
The Organising Committee is composed by the teachers João Rosas, Carolina Sousa and José Abreu from Arrifes Basic Education School and by Lina Luciano, Simão Alvar and Beatriz Cachim from Domingos Rebelo Secondary School.
