A total of 1.613 adults, gathered in 93 nucleuses, joined the last edition of the “Açores Activos” regional program of promotion of physical and athletic activity.

Since the beginning, in 2005/2006, the initiative promoted by the Regional Directorate for Sport (DRD) registers a growing adhesion, having begun its activity with 669 registered people, a number that increased for 1.526, in 2006/2007, and for 1.613 in the next edition.

In all the islands, with the exception of Corvo, the “Açores Activos” promoted, in a partnership with the local DRD and local entities, several activities as part of the gymnastics as fitness, step, located, maintenance and aerobics.

Karate, athletics, soccer, futsal, volleyball, basketball, paintball, skating, swimming, ball dances, table tennis, golf, judo, pedestrian walks, race and race walking constituted the remaining kinds of sport of the program.

At the level of the promotion and of the sensitization organized by the services of sport of each island, the DRD promoted 25 actions of diffusion that included nearly three thousand people and that included tournaments of kind of sports, demonstrations, walks, seminars, among others.

The “Açores Activos” main objective consists in providing the regular practice of physical and athletic activities, as way of promotion of active life styles, familiarity, sociability and health, addressed at a part of the Azorean population that isn’t fitted in the trained or federated sport.

For such, the program establishes protocols of support with village councils, institutions of social solidarity, houses of people, schools, apprentices' clubs, sport promoting associations, youthful associations or other entities without profitable gains aiming the constitution of nucleuses of activity of the “Açores Activos”.
