Nautical Sports have a great development potential in the Azores which should be promoted, the Regional Director for Sport mentioned in Angra do Heroísmo today.
Speaking to journalists after the opening ceremony of the renewal works of the Angra do Heroísmo Nautical Club, in which the activity plan for the rest of the year was also presented, Rui Santos reminded that the sea, always present in the Azoreans’ life, provides unique opportunities for nautical sports.
The Regional Director, who participated at the ceremony on behalf of the President of the Government, Carlos César, said that the Government has been promoting nautical sports, particularly sailing, a priority sport, through the support to associations and clubs, whether in the acquisition of sports material and equipment, whether in the construction of facilities.
Rui Santos announced that, after the purchase of 40 vessels for training on sailing some years ago, new acquisitions to renew and expand the available vessels for sailing will take place next year.
In addition to the works to renew the headquarters of the Angra do Heroísmo Nautical Club, now concluded, a project to expand the headquarters with the construction of a new building, to be built next to the current facilities, will be implemented within a year. This work is integrated in the Plan to Renew the Angra Bay, with the funding of the Government of the Azores and of the Angra do Heroísmo City Hall.
