Azores to compete in 9 sports in the 23rd Island Games -"Bastia 2019"

Eighty-three athletes, aged between 12 and 17 years, will participate in the 23rd edition of the Island Games to be held in the city of Bastia on the island of Corsica, France, between May 21 and 26.
 
In this edition, whose competitions take place between May 22 and 25, the Azores will be represented in the following sports: Athletics (men's and women's), Football (men's), Judo (men's and women's), Karate (men's and women's), Swimming (men's and women's), Tennis (men's and women's) and Table Tennis (men's and women's), Sailing (men's and women's) and Volleyball (women's).
 
Handball (women's), Basketball (men's/women's), Fencing (men's/women's), Rugby (men's) and Triathlon (men's/women's) are other official sports in competition at the "Bastia 2019" Island Games.
 
The Azorean delegation at the "Bastia 2019" Games also includes 18 technicians and managers and a doctor as well as three official members of the Regional Directorate for Sport.
 
In addition to the Azores, the event will be also attended by representatives of the Balearic Islands, Corfu, Corsica, Guyana, Elba, Jersey, Cape Verde, Madeira, Malta, Guadeloupe, Sardinia and Sicily.
 
The Island Games are primarily intended to create a spirit of European citizenship in the context of the Olympic ideal by passing on to our youth, through Sport, a message based on fair play and respect for others. Moreover, this event also brings together young people from different origins, but who share a common background: insularity.
 
The Games are organised in accordance with international rules and participation is open for young people whose sports situations complies with the criteria set out by the respective national sports federations.
