Azorean students win national MegaSprinter championship

In the context of School Sport activities, the National Phase of the 2012 MegaSprinter was held at the Vagos Municipal Stadium on April 13 and 14. Nearly 800 students participated in this sports event.

The Azorean delegation was composed by students Sofia Sousa (Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School - Terceira) and Miguel Ventura (Canto da Maia Basic Education School - São Miguel), who were selected in the Regional Phase that took place on the island of Pico on March 2 and 3. These students were accompanied by teacher Rui Soares (teacher performing duties at the Regional Directorate for Sport).

Sofia Sousa, who was integrated in the Braga delegation, won the national title in the mixed relay race - Children's category - A and B (39.06 seconds). In the MegaSprinter competition (40 metre race), an event that counted on the participation of 40 students in the Children's category - A, this Azorean student placed 8th in the 4th round (7.32 seconds).

With the time 5.94 seconds, Miguel Ventura won the national MegaSprinter championship in the Children's category - A (39 participants).

The 2012 MegaSprinter counted on the participation of 6812 students: 5716 in the School Phase, 1044 in the Island Phase, 50 in the Regional Phase and 2 in the National Phase. The Azores were represented by 34 schools.
