 16th Azorean Sports Gala delivers 10 trophies on the island of S. Jorge

The island of São Jorge, through its clubs and associations, leaders, coaches and athletes, won 10 trophies at the 16th Azorean Sports Gala that took place in Velas.
 
With regard to the "National Team" category, this prize-delivery ceremony distinguished the athletes of São Jorge Judo Club: André Soares, who represented the National Judo Team at the European Open in Madrid, under 66 kg category, Men's Seniors, high-performance athlete - Level B; Beatriz Mendes, who represented the National Judo Team in the European Youth Cup, under 70 kg category, Junior Women's category; Filipe Soares, who represented the National Judo Team in the Junior European Cup, under 66Kg category, Junior Men's category.
 
Also in the same category, the event distinguished other athletes of São Jorge Judo Club: Nuno Pereira, who represented the National Judo Team in the Junior European Cup, under under 81 kg category, Junior Men's category, and Tiago Rodrigues, who represented the National Judo Team at the European Open in Madrid, under 90 kg category, Men's Seniors category, high-level athlete - level B.
 
As for the "National and International Results and Scores" category - individual sports, the Regional Director for Sport, António Gomes, delivered the trophies to judo athletes, also from São Jorge Judo Club, Carlos Alberto Luz, high-level athlete -Level A, who was 3rd place in the Tunis African open, under 81 kg category, Senior Men's class, and Lorrayna Costa, who qualified first in the Mestre Costa Matos National Tournament, under 48kg category, Senior Women's category.
 
In the "Entities" category, the event honoured the sports clubs, mainly focused on football practice, that completed 50 years of existence in 2016, namely Velense Sports Group and Urzelinense Football Club.
 
José Guilherme Teixeira, with over 20 years of experience as sports manager at several clubs, was the recipient of a prize in the "Personalities" category. He began practising Judo in 1988, being a grade I judo coach.
 
This prize-delivery ceremony took place Friday at the auditorium of Velas Basic Education and Secondary School. The event featured the performance of Dance Club of Velas School Sports Club and the Group of "Viola da Terra" (Azorean guitar) players of São Jorge.
