The Regional Directorate for Culture, through its External Services, joins the celebrations of the World Poetry Day, celebrated annually on March 21, promoting various initiatives on the islands of S. Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico.

The Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive in Angra do Heroísmo organises today an activity under the title "Celebrating Poetry, Celebrating Spring" between 6 and 8 PM. Organised by poet António Neves, it is directed to young people and adults.

This initiative includes a display of books by Azorean poets and a poetry recital in which several poets will recite poems of their own or those written by other poets; admission is free.

The event features the participation of Ana Paula Inácio, Tiago Rodrigues, Luísa Ribeiro, António de Névada, Bianca Mendes, Mário Cabral, Sónia Bettencourt, Carlos Bessa, Teresa Valadão, Dionísio de Sousa, Margarida Ferreira and Ricardo Ávila.

In Horta, the João José da Graça Public Library also joins the celebrations, promoting today a poetry recital at 6:30 PM.

This recital is held in partnership with Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School, Horta Vocational Training School and Community of Readers - "Chá com Livros.”

The Pico Museum celebrates the World Poetry Day with a poetry session that will present poems by Rui Risona; the texts will be recited by the author and his guests Isabel Nunes, Palmira Palhaça and Manuel Costa Júnior. The event takes place today at the auditorium of the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico at 9 PM.

On S. Miguel, the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes an exhibition on the documentary estate of Natália Correia at Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, starting Wednesday.

The World Poetry Day was created at 30th UNESCO General Conference on November 16, 1999, in order to encourage the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry.
