Angra do Heroísmo ,  June 25, 2018

World Library Day marked in the Azores

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Public Libraries and Regional Archives, joins the celebrations of the World Library Day to be marked on July 1.

The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive, as partner of Bookcrossing, will promote the maiden voyage of the books that will begin this project at Antero de Quental Garden on July 2 at 11 AM.

Bookcrossing is a global movement that aims to encourage reading and the creation of a book sharing community, being regarded as a global reading club that knows no geographical boundaries. It was founded under the motto: "Find a free book, read it and release it."

Thus, bookcrossing members "free" books so that they may be "found" by other readers with the aim of transforming the world into a library.

Beginning at Antero de Quental Garden, the Ponta Delgada Public Library will start "freeing" books in several public places throughout the municipalities of São Miguel Island from July 2. The purpose is to promote reading habits by bringing books closer to wider audiences and creating a new community of readers.

In order to comment on the books "freed" by the Library, readers should access the electronic address www.bparpd.azores.gov.pt in the Highlights area, where they may access the Bookcrossing website -www.bookcrossing.com - and insert the Bookcrossing identification number (BCID). This will allow readers to know where books came from, their path, who read them and leave a comment about them.

In turn, the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archives in Angra do Heroísmo promotes two initiatives with different approaches.

On July 2, the Library presents an exhibition at 5 PM, which will be open to the public until August 10. It was created following a challenge launched to a group of urban sketchers residing on Terceira Island for an approach to the library in its heritage and functional component.

The group of urban sketchers from Terceira was founded three years ago by Emanuel Félix, Manuel Meneses Martins and Rui Messias.

This group will be represented in July at the symposium of this international movement that takes place, for the second time, in Portugal, more specifically in the city of Porto.

Moreover, younger audiences will have the opportunity to knowledge the Library's backstage with the "Librarian for a Day" initiative between Jul2 and 6 from 9 AM to 5 PM.

This activity is directed at children aged between 6 and 14, upon prior registration. It will contribute to the development of children and young people, promoting skills such as independence, self-esteem, creativity, leadership, cooperation and teamwork, providing young apprentices with the opportunity to experience the day of a librarian.

The João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta also joins these celebrations, promoting a guided tour to its storage rooms on July 2 at 2:30 PM.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
