Ponta Delgada ,  September 23, 2010

Regional Government promotes publication of books by young authors

The Regional Government will release a collection of fictional literature, in book format, of the works selected under LABJOVEM - Young Creators of the Azores Competition, which was held in 2009.
The assurance was provided in a protocol signed in Ponta Delgada on Thursday between the Regional Directorate of Culture and the Burra de Milho Cultural Association, the organiser of LABJOVEM competition, which stipulates the delivery of the texts of the first two selected books, in digital format, in the last quarter of 2010.
The selected works were “Adeus Amanhã” (Goodbye Tomorrow) by Rui Sousa, from Angra do Heroísmo, and “Indiferença” (Indifference) by Rui Cabral, from Ponta Delgada, whose first book will be launched between January and March 2011.
When signing the Protocol, the Regional Director of Culture stressed the importance of the support provided by the Government, established by that partnership, to the publication of a literary collection by young designers that will be available in the Azorean market.
Jorge Paulus Bruno reiterated the Government’s goal to disseminate the local artistic, literary and cultural production to the public in general.
During the ceremony, which was also attended by the Regional Director for Youth, Bruno Pacheco, the Regional of Culture stated that under the terms of the protocol, the Azorean Government will progressively publish news works by young authors every two years.
Furthermore, the protocol also determines the publication of a maximum of six works for each edition of the LABJOVEM competition and ensures the publication of individual books with a run of one thousand copies.
These goals are integrated in the current policy that is being carried out by the Government of the Azores to promote the social and cultural development of the Autonomous Region.
The Burra de Milho Cultural Association, located on Terceira Island, has been stimulating local development by privileging the association between the cultural and social dimension, through arts and creativity.
This organisation is guided and based on specific and self-funded projects, which are supported by a participative, organisational and cooperative networking structure.
The LABOVEM competition, whose first edition took place in 2007, is sponsored by the Regional Directorate for Youth.
