Ponta Delgada and Horta Public Libraries join celebrations of World Theatre Day

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Ponta Delgada Public Library and João José da Graça Public Library in Horta, joins the celebrations of the World Theatre Day on March 27.

The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive will present the exhibition entitled "Performing Arts: a look at theatre on São Miguel" at Teatro Micaelense on that day. The event is organised in partnership with Teatro Micaelense and Solmar Shopping Centre.

The Library intends to go through spaces, shows, original texts, local artists and playwrights linked to the development, incentive and theatrical production on São Miguel Island. The exhibition is based on documents about theatre on this island in archives and collections belonging to António Roberto Oliveira Rodrigues, Natália Correia, Bruno Tavares Carreiro, Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues, Teófilo Braga, Ernesto do Canto, José do Canto and Sociedade Teatral Michaelense/Teatro Micaelense,. The search also comprised public archives, such as those belonging to the Civil Government of Ponta Delgada.

With this initiative, the Library intends to disseminate the richness of theatrical production on the island of São Miguel from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, as evidenced by photographs, original manuscripts, show posters and even architectural projects and construction expenses.

The event opens the itinerant exhibitions designated as "Archives outdoors." They will increase proximity to citizens and disseminate the wealth and diversity of the documents at the care of the institution, bringing this information to a wider and more varied audience. Moreover, these exhibitions will carry out the practical implementation of its mission to promote and disseminate history, culture and collective memory.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public at Teatro Micaelense until May 27, may still be visited during the month of June at Solmar Shopping Centre.

In turn, the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive promotes the performance of staged readings of theatrical texts as well as the presentation of the bibliographical exhibition entitled "Theatre of the World" at 6:30 PM. This initiative is supported by Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School, Horta Vocational Training School, Horta Basic Education and Secondary School and the Community of Readers - "Chá com Livros" (Tea with Books).

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
