Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library promotes Renaissance Poetry Concert

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive, promotes three sessions of a Renaissance Poetry Concert by the Library Choir with comments by Sérgio Toste on November 25 and 26.

On November 25, there will be two sessions at 10:45 AM and 3:05 PM for the students and teachers of Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade Secondary School; attendance requires prior registration. On the following, there will be a session for the public in general at 4 PM; admission is free.

This event offers a voyage to the Renaissance time. It features the participation of Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library Choir, mezzo-soprano Marta Fagundes, baritone Fábio Silveira and instrumentalists Luana Rocha (flute) and Francisco Rocha (piano), under the artistic direction of Duarte Gonçalves da Rosa. The comments will be provided by Sérgio Toste, classicist and Portuguese Literature teacher.

The Renaissance Poetry Concert, which will take place at the Library premises in Angra do Heroísmo, includes specific pieces composed for this concert by Antero Ávila and adaptations of period music to Sá de Miranda’s poetry, and even pieces for the teaching of choral singing, with special emphasis on Tomás Borba whose estate is under the administration of this Library.

Furthermore, the programme also comprises the literary and poetic works of Bernardim Ribeiro, Diogo Bernardes, Gil Vicente, Luís Vaz de Camões, João Roiz de Castel-Branco and Rodrigues Lobo, among others.

Regarding the sessions for school audiences, the preparation for this activity was carried out by Portuguese teachers, namely the dissemination of the programme among students and the possibility of studying one of the texts by one of the Renaissance writers in question. After the concert, students will write a paper for the Portuguese class. It should contain a report of the activity and their critical appreciation, among other things.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events are available for consultation at the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the electronic address www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
