João José da Graça Public Library in Horta presents "Europe Begins Here" exhibition

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta, presents the "Europe Begins Here!" exhibition until April 12 with the aim of disseminating the "European Heritage Label" (EHL) and the 38 cultural sites awarded this distinction.

This exhibition seeks to strengthen the feeling of belonging to the European Union, emphasising the shared values and elements of history and cultural heritage. It also shows how the EHL intends to value the diversity of nations and regions that make up the European geographical framework, while promoting intercultural dialogue.

Travelling throughout the country, this exhibition, designed by the European Commission, focuses on photography as a way of communicating the spirit of the EHL distinction.

Hence, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the distinguished cultural sites through visual contents, which will be accompanied by an explanation on its symbolic value and its role in European history and culture or in the construction of the European Union.

Portugal currently has cultural sites classified under the EHL, namely the General Library of the University of Coimbra, the Charter of Law of Abolition of the Death Penalty (1867), preserved in the Torre do Tombo National Archives, and the Sagres Promontory.

In addition to these three national cultural sites, the Azores Underwater Archaeological Heritage may also receive this distinction, which is, together with the Lines of Torres Vedras, one of the Portuguese applications for the EHL classification.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
