João José da Graça Public Library and Pico Museum mark International Women's Day

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through its External Services, joins the celebrations of the International Women's Day, marked on March 8, with various initiatives.

The João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive in Horta presents a Book Exhibition on this theme, which may be visited from March 8 to 22 between 9 AM and 7 PM.

Also on Friday, March 8, the book entitled "Introdução às Teorias Feministas do Direito" (Introduction to Feminist Law Theories) by Rita Mota Sousa will be launched at 6:30 PM.

Rita Mota Sousa, who will also make the presentation of the work, holds a degree in Law from the Catholic University of Porto. She has worked as Public Prosecutor since 2006.

In recent years, Rita Sousa has been interested in studying law from a critical perspective, analysing how law may contribute to the maintenance and reproduction of power relations and, thus, social injustices. This study has been developed with particular attention to the issues of gender equality and feminism.

For its part, the Pico Museum will join the celebrations of the International Women's Day with the screening of the film "A Loucura de Rosa A." (The Madness of Rosa A.) by Guilherme (Bill) Moniz, a native of Pico residing in Canada who has prominent in the production of historical fiction regarding themes related to Azorean culture and diaspora. The presentation is scheduled for March 8 at 9 PM at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico.

Shot on the island of Pico with local actors, "A Loucura de Rosa A." focuses on the cultural imagery of the island at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, with special emphasis on the role and status of women in Azorean rural societies.

In addition to the screening of the film, the event includes the delivery of a paper by the Local Centre for the Prevention and Fight Against Violence of Pico Island.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
