Padre António Vieira

Igreja do Colégio listens once more the sermon uttered by priest António Vieira in 1654

The Igreja do Colégio of Ponta Delgada listens again, next Thursday in the night, the Sermon to Saint Theresa uttered in 1654, in this Jesuit temple, by priest António Vieira.

In a space now occupied by the Religious Art Nucleus of the Carlos Machado Museum, the words of the monk who was made famous for his sermons and for the defence of the native populations of South America, will be reproduced, in appropriate version, by the actor Miguel Borges.

The initiative joins a cycle of fulfilment of programs to evoke the 400 years of the birth of Priest António Vieira, promoted by the Regional Directorate for Culture of the Presidency of the Regional Government in the islands of S. Miguel, Faial, Terceira and Gracious.

The priest António Vieira passed by the Azores coming from Brazil, in 1654, when going to Lisbon, in order to obtain new favourable laws to the Indians of Maranhão.

The vessel in which he was travelling sunk far off of Corvo and the castaways, retired by a Dutch ship corsair, were left in Graciosa Island, after being robbed of everything.

In his passage by the archipelago, priest António Vieira visited the College of the Jesuits of Angra and then it of Ponta Delgada.

To the 15th of October of 1654, day of Saint Theresa, he uttered the sermon of tribute to this saint, in the Church of the College of the Jesuits (“Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas”) of Ponta Delgada, devoted to All the Saints (“Todos os Santos”).
