On Wednesday, in the city of Angra de Heroismo, the Regional Directorate for Culture, Gabriela Canavilhas, on behalf of the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, presided over the opening ceremony of the International Forum of Bullfighting Culture, organised by the Tertúlia Tauromáquica Terceirense.
The event, sponsored by the Regional Government of the Azores and other public and private institutions, gathers approximately two hundred aficionados from the Azores, Continental Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, França, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Spain as well as representatives of bullfighting clubs from London, Milan and New York City.
During the three days of roundtables and public discussions, the relations of bullfighting culture with Philosophy, Aesthetics, Economy, Ethics, Politics and Law will be explored with the participation of distinguished national and international speakers that specialise in these areas.
After the opening session, there was a presentation regarding the evolution of bullfighting in the Azores and its juridical context, by Álvaro Monjardino.
Other roundtable discussions and presentations address such topics as Politics and Bullfighting, the Culture of Bullfighting, the Union of Aficionados, Bulls and Ecology, Philosophy and, finally, Ethics and Aesthetics in Bullfighting. Two films will be presented: the “O Toiro” (The Bull) of the Portuguese director Camilo Azevedo and “Bullfighting Cultures in the World”, by the Spanish directors Bous al Carrer and Alberto de Jesus.
The Regional Director for Agricultural Development, Joaquim Pires, shall attend the event.
