Artistic residencies, exhibitions and concerts in September at Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre, promotes two artistic residencies, concerts and several activities for youngsters in September, among other initiatives.

The artistic residency of Né Barros runs from September 1 to 6, involving the project of the play entitled "IO." It will bring together the contrast of landscape and elements, where extreme environments such as volcanoes or glaciers are produced, and the fictional and mythical dimension of characters as contrasting identities.

"Landscapes, Machines and Animals" is the subtitle of a series of projects to be developed over the next two years, starting now with this project by Né Barros with Beatriz Valentim and Bruno Senune as performers and music by José Alberto Gomes.

The premiere of the show "IO - Landscapes, Machines and Animals" will be held at the Blackbox of Arquipélago on September 6 at 9:30 PM.

The Outro group will hold its artistic residency between September 9 and 20. The premiere of the show "The trees let their most beautiful branches to die" is scheduled for September 20 at 9:30 PM, also at the Blackbox."

In turn, the exhibition of the photography project entitled "Despensas - the tradition of Rabo de Peixe" by Rubén Monfort will open on September 13 at 6 PM.

This installation summarises the research and the perspective on this unique popular tradition in the Town of Rabo de Peixe on occasion of the Holy Spirit festivities, through documentaries, interviews and photographs.

The exhibition may be visited at the Educational Room of the Contemporary Arts Centre until November 17.

On September 28, Arquipélago holds a "Viola da Terra" concert (traditional Azorean guitar) at 5:30 PM, an event promoted by the Viola da Terra Youth Association.

This concert will feature players from five Azorean islands, namely Alexandre Fontes (Santa Maria), Bruno Bettencourt (Terceira), Jorge Silva (Pico), Rafael Carvalho (São Miguel) and Renato Bettencourt (São Jorge).

On September 29, the Educational Service promotes a workshop visit under the designation "Aquatic Phenomena Station" for children aged between two and six at 3 PM.

This activity aims to address topics related to the sea, such as what exists in the sea so that children can understand which beings can be found there and their dangers.

Participants are required to bring their favourite aquatic animal in toy form.

In September, the three activities developed by the Educational Service under the "Weather Station" exhibition are available by appointment. The “Aquatic Phenomena Station” visit-workshop for children aged between two and six will address topics related to the sea and marine animals. In turn, the “Intercommunication Station” visit-workshop for children aged between six and 12 will challenge participants to create forms of communication through gestures or objects that will be created by each participant. Lastly, the "Weather Station - Phenomena on the move" visit-workshop, aimed at young and adult audiences, will guide participants in the observation and identification of the phenomena that inspired the artists on the "Weather Station" exhibition. They will then have the opportunity to record, through photography, some weather elements visible outside Arquipélago.

Registrations for this and other activities promoted by the Educational Services should be made through the form available on the Arquipélago website at the email [email protected] or by telephone 296 470130.

The "Weather Station" exhibition, curated by Sérgio Mah, features photography and video works by Sandra Rocha and Manuela Marques. It will remain open to the public until October 20.

The Artistic Residency space is currently displaying the "Fogo Lácteo” installation by Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, a project presented in the 3rd Cycle of “Sonic Geometry,” and the "Landmark" installation by Joaquim Morais Oliveira. The latter consists of a sculptural architecture piece that was designed using endogenous materials, namely cryptomeria, and addresses issues related to sustainability and renewable energies, with special emphasis on geothermal energy.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
