Artistic Season 2018 promotes presentation of the film "O Feiticeiro da Calheta" on Faial and Pico

The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, promotes the presentation of the feature film "O Feiticeiro da Calheta" (The Sorcerer of Calheta) by Madeira-born director Luís Miguel Jardim under the Artistic Season 2018 and the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The film will be screened at João José da Graça Public Library in Horta on Thursday, March 15, at 9 PM and at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico on the following day at 8:30 PM.

The film is about 75 minutes long and suitable for audiences over 12 years; admission is free.

This cinematographic work intends to portray, with merely educational purposes, the experiences and traditions of the people of Madeira Islands in the 1930s and 1950s. Special emphasis is given to the "Sorcerer of Calheta," an illiterate poet who was cherished and recognised by local inhabitants. He was also the author of “Bailinho da Madeira” lyrics.

The political regime that profoundly marked the history of Madeira based on unfair and unbalanced relations between landlords and settlers, social intrigues, the occupations of the time, the cultural roots of a people and folk dance groups are some of the themes portrayed in this film. It features the guest appearances of Alberto João Jardim, Irineu Barreto, Nini Andrade Silva and João Carlos Abreu.

This film involved more than 400 people, including actors, extras and the technical team. It has an entirely original soundtrack by Madeira-born composer João Augusto Abreu.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
