Regional Secretary for Tourism opens tourism project that differentiates accommodation offer on São Jorge Island
The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism pointed out today that the "Cabanas da Viscondessa" tourist resort presents a concept “fully aligned” with the sustainable positioning of the Azores destination.
Marta Guerreiro spoke at the opening of this tourism project located in the municipality of Velas, São Jorge Island, in an “quite appealing” area in terms of landscape, namely the panoramic views over the sea.
“We have noticed that the decisions of our private agents take into account our strategic documents, specifically with regard to the creation of accommodation units that qualify and differentiate the Azores destination. This has led to the emergence of innovative tourism projects that are clearly directed to leisure tourism, promoting a closer contact with nature through extensive green areas and other outdoor spaces for the enjoyment of guests,” highlighted Marta Guerreiro.
According to the Regional Secretary, “in this specific case, we are talking about tourist apartments consisting of six apartments, which correspond to an increase of 18 beds on the island of São Jorge.”
As regards this type of accommodation (traditional hospitality), Marta Guerreiro noted the growth of 5.2% in the total number of beds available on this island from 2019 to 2020.
"The existing accommodation offer on the island of São Jorge is diverse and includes, besides traditional hospitality, Rural Tourism and Local Accommodation units," Marta Guerreiro stressed, adding that, currently, the total availability corresponds to 999 beds in all types of accommodation.
On the occasion, the government official stressed that, "despite the times we are living in, it is with great pride and satisfaction that we see our entrepreneurs beginning their activity as they believe that it is worth investing in this sector in the Region, given its potential."
"As Secretary for Tourism, I emphasise, once again, that the Regional Government is and will always be on the side of those who seek to enhance, disseminate and revitalise the Azores," said Marta Guerreiro.
