Marta Guerreiro highlights importance of recycling drop-offs in waste management circuit

The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stressed on Faial Island the importance of recycling drop-offs as they are "controlled and sealed containers," where urban waste is stored and selected for subsequent referral to the appropriate final destination.

Marta Guerreiro spoke after a visit to the recycling drop-offs in the village of Castelo Branco. On the occasion, she emphasised the commitment of Village Councils in the installation of these infrastructures, noting that the Regional Directorate for the Environment "supported the construction of three infrastructures on Faial Island in the villages of Castelo Branco, Ribeirinha and Salão."

The Regional Secretary also stated that "similar procedures are under way to equip three villages of São Jorge Island with recycling drop-offs."

"These are places where it is possible to dispose of various types of waste, namely green waste and forest biomass, construction and demolition waste, electrical and electronic equipment and bulky waste, among others," explained the government official.

At the time, the Regional Secretary stressed the fact that Faial achieved the "zero landfill" target last year by means of recovering all its urban waste.

"Hence, 82% of waste was referred to material and organic recovery, while the remaining (18%) was referred to energy recovery on Terceira Island," added Marta Guerreiro.
