Government of the Azores welcomes representation of Fajã dos Cubres in "7 Wonders of Portugal - Villages" contest

The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism welcomed the representation of Fajã dos Cubres, located on São Jorge Island, among the 14 finalists of "7 Wonders of Portugal - Villages" contest in the "Coastal Villages" category.

As one of the main symbols of the Azores in terms of natural landscape, Fajã dos Cubres gains even more prominence with its position in this contest. It represents a further step in the work developed to enhance the projection of the archipelago as an active nature tourist destination.

In 2016, the "Fajãs" (geological formations) of São Jorge were distinguished as Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO. They add up to those already distinguished on the islands of Graciosa, Corvo and Flores, which clearly shows the true relation between human societies and ecosystems.

The importance of the Azores representation in this contest arises from the fact that the "7 Wonders of Portugal" contest is a national brand that acknowledges and highlights the unique heritage that makes up the country's identity. In this particular case, it promotes the development of São Jorge due to one of its distinguishing and genuine elements, such as Fajã dos Cubres.

In addition to the "Coastal Village" category, the contest comprises other six categories. The Azores were also among the seven finalists per category in some of them: Remote Villages (Fajã de São João - São Jorge Island), Riverside Villages (Furnas and Sete Cidades - São Miguel Island), Authentic Villages (Biscoitos - Terceira Island) and Villages in Protected Areas (São Lourenço Bay - Santa Maria Island).

The seven winners of the seven categories will be selected by the largest number of votes on each of them. The final voting will be held at the Final Gala to take place in the village of Piódão on September 3.
