The Regional Inspectorate of the Environment (IRA) has initiated 142 legal proceedings related to the violation of environmental protection legislation.
The IRA was established by the Regional Government of the Azores and endowed with the task of “assuring the highest levels of environmental well being” in the region. Funds resulting from these legal proceedings will be channelled to the Regional Environmental Fund and applied in the “reparation of environmental damages.”
In addition to concentrating on environmental monitoring as a means of prevention, the Government of Carlos César will maintain current efforts to export residues that have accumulated over the past years in several islands.
For example, until the end of this year, Carlos César expects that six thousand tons of used tires will be exported, thus concluding a cleaning process already undertaken in the islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria.
The Regional Government has ensured that the management of used tires, oil and electrical residues is carried out by duly licensed national institutions. All oil residues have been successfully exported.
